How to cancel a rental car: deadlines, steps and costs
Almost every rental car booked through a broker can be cancelled. The question is never whether, but by when and at what cost. Both are in your own confirmation. This overview helps you find the right place to look.
You cancel a rental car in the customer account of the broker you booked with, or through the cancellation link in your booking confirmation. On cancellable rates this is free until a deadline shortly before pickup, and depending on the provider that lands between 48 hours and one day beforehand.

Where do I find my cancellation deadline?
In the booking confirmation you received by email right after booking. Look for “cancellation”, “cancellation terms” or “free cancellation until”. If it states a specific date and time, that is the binding deadline, not the general claim on the provider's website. If the email is gone, the same information sits in your customer account with the booking, usually under “my bookings” or booking details.
How long is cancellation free?
That depends on the broker and on the rate you booked. The figures below are the usual deadlines these providers work with. They do not replace a look at your confirmation: an individual rate can differ, and what was agreed for your specific booking always takes precedence.
How do I cancel step by step?
The flow is similar across brokers. Sign in to the customer account, open the booking in question and choose the cancellation option, usually labelled “cancel for free” or “cancel”. Many providers also put a cancellation link at the bottom of the initial confirmation, so you do not have to sign in at all. After submitting you receive a cancellation confirmation by email. Keep it until the refund shows up.
What does cancelling cost?
On a rate marked as free to cancel, nothing is charged within the deadline: any prepayment goes back in full, usually to the original payment method. After the deadline, or on prepaid rates without a flex option, it looks different: part or all of the amount can be withheld. How much is in the cancellation terms of your booking, not in a general price list.
How long does the refund take?
The cancellation confirmation normally arrives immediately. Money reaching your account or card statement usually takes a few business days, because it passes between broker, payment provider and bank. If nothing has arrived after two weeks, the cancellation confirmation with its date and booking number is the document to follow up with customer service.
Cancelling because the price dropped?
Then the order matters more than the deadline. Cancel first and rebook second, and you can lose the cheaper car in the same minute. Inventory is not held for you while no confirmation exists. Always secure the new, comparable booking first and only cancel the old one once the new confirmation is in your inbox.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I cancel a rental car for free?
- On a cancellable rate, yes, as long as you stay within the deadline stated in your confirmation. Prepaid rates without a flex option are excluded; there a fee can apply or the payment can be forfeited entirely.
- What happens to my prepayment?
- If you cancel a cancellable rate within the deadline, the prepayment is refunded in full, normally to the original payment method. It usually takes a few business days before the credit is visible.
- Do I cancel with the broker or with the rental company?
- With the broker you booked through. They are your contractual partner and settle the cancellation with the rental desk. Calling the desk directly rarely helps, because the booking is not managed there under your name.
- Can I modify a booking instead of cancelling it?
- Many providers allow changes, but they are repriced. If all you want is a lower price for the same requirement, booking again and then cancelling is usually the clearer route, provided the new booking is confirmed.
- What if the cancellation deadline has already passed?
- Then a lower price usually buys you nothing, because the cancellation fee eats the saving. Check your booking terms anyway: some rates allow a partial refund after the deadline rather than a total forfeit.
- Do I have to give a reason for cancelling?
- No. On a cancellable rate, cancelling within the deadline requires no justification. A free-text field in the form is optional and has no bearing on whether the cancellation is free.
- What happens to extras like a child seat or additional driver?
- Extras booked through the broker lapse with the main booking and are refunded with it. Anything you intended to add at the rental desk was never part of the reservation. If you rebook, you have to select the extras again, and count them in when comparing prices.
