Rebooking a rental car: how your booking actually gets cheaper
The car is booked, and now the same vehicle shows up for less: with another broker, in a fresh search, or simply a few weeks later. The obvious idea is to rebook. Whether that actually ends in a lower price depends less on the offer than on the route you choose for the switch.
You can almost always rebook a cancellable rental car for less. The safe route rarely goes through the broker's modify function, though: book the cheaper, comparable offer as a new reservation first, wait for the confirmation email, and only then cancel the old booking within its free cancellation deadline.

Rebooking a rental car means two different things
When brokers talk about rebooking, they mean the modify function in your customer account: you change the date, time or station of your existing booking. Someone who wants to rebook for less almost always means something else, namely the same rental car for less money. There is a second route for that: a new booking at the lower price, followed by a free cancellation of the old one. Both routes are casually called rebooking, but they behave completely differently on price. It pays to keep them apart before you click anything.
Why the modify function rarely makes it cheaper
The modify function recalculates your booking at the rate valid today. If that has risen in the meantime, you pay more after the change than before, even though you only adjusted a detail. There is no guarantee that a fallen price is passed on: you only see the new total in the change dialog. The function is made for a changed travel plan, say a different pickup time or another station, and for that it is convenient. As a way to a lower price it only works when the new total shown is actually below your old one, and that is rarely the case.

The route that actually gets cheaper: book new, then cancel
The precondition is a cancellable rate whose free deadline is still running. Then you secure the cheaper offer as its own new booking first and wait until the confirmation arrives by email. Read it once, calmly: station, date, time, vehicle class and insurance cover have to match what you were shown. Only when that checks out do you cancel the old reservation in the customer account or through the cancellation link in the original email. In this order little can go wrong: if anything is off with the new booking, you simply keep the old one and have lost nothing.
When is rebooking for less worth it?
Three conditions have to line up. First, your existing booking must be cancellable free of charge; the deadline is in your booking confirmation or voucher. Second, the new offer has to be genuinely comparable, otherwise you are buying a worse product and calling it a saving. Third, the gap should be large enough to justify the effort: you select extras again, wait for a refund and check another confirmation. For a few euros you can skip it; with a clearly lower total it pays off quickly.
Comparable means the same product, not just the same station
The same station and the same dates do not make two offers comparable. What matters is the vehicle class, the insurance cover including the excess, the mileage included and the payment terms. Extras belong in the sum as well: a child seat, an additional driver or a one-way fee has to be selected again in the new offer, and it can be priced differently there. So always compare the final price with everything you actually need. Our comparison checklist shows how to work through that systematically.
The price keeps falling: rebooking more than once is allowed
There is no limit on how often you may book new and cancel, as long as every rate in the chain stays cancellable. Repeating it still only makes sense when the new gap is noticeable, because every switch means another refund to wait for and another confirmation to check. Keep an eye on the deadlines too: the closer pickup gets, the shorter the window in which the current old booking can still be cancelled for free. The usual broker deadlines are collected in our cancellation overview.
Watching the price without checking every day
The tedious part of rebooking for less is not the booking, it is waiting for the right moment: prices move irregularly, and nobody enjoys repeating the same search week after week. That is exactly what RateRewind is for. You save your existing booking, and our price watcher keeps comparing cancellable, comparable offers for your rental. When the price falls noticeably below yours, you get an email with the find and the safe order for switching. All that is left for you is the rebooking itself.
Frequently asked questions
- Does it cost anything to rebook a rental car?
- Through a new booking with a cancellation afterwards it costs nothing, as long as your old rate is cancellable free of charge and you stay within the deadline. You simply pay the new, lower price. The broker's modify function is usually free of fees as well, but it recalculates your booking at the current rate and quickly ends up more expensive rather than cheaper.
- Can I rebook for less with the same broker?
- Yes. Create the cheaper offer as a new, separate booking instead of modifying the existing one. That way the old reservation stays untouched until the new one is confirmed. Some brokers adjust the price directly if you ask their support; asking costs nothing, but do not rely on it.
- What is the difference between rebooking and cancelling plus booking again?
- Rebooking through the modify function changes your existing booking and recalculates it at the rate valid today. Cancelling plus booking again is two separate transactions: you book the new offer at the price shown and cancel the old reservation afterwards. For a lower price the second route is almost always the better one, because you see exactly what you get and what it costs before you commit.
- How often can I rebook a rental car?
- As often as you like, as long as every booking in the chain remains cancellable free of charge and its deadline is still running. In practice this limits itself: shortly before pickup the free cancellation windows close, and small price movements are not worth the effort.
- Does rebooking for less work on prepaid rates?
- Usually not. Prepaid rates without free cancellation refund only part of the price or nothing at all when you cancel, and the fee swallows the saving. Check your confirmation for a free cancellation deadline. Only then is the switch worth it, and only then should you start it.
